Electronic taste or taste of electronic ?

Nimesha Ranasinghe is a researcher working on digital simulation of taste and smell sensations: the idea is to have devices able to provide a taste using electrical and thermal stimulation of the tongue. On a scientific point of view, it is of course quite interesting, espacially as he claims to have obtained sweet, bitter, sour and salty (those last two are known to be due to electrical stimulation between taste molecules and the tongue).

One could imagine to use this for the perfect sensory panel calibration item, but Nimesha goes further and already imagine a voice over IP system ... Could we give taste to tasteless diet product? Could we taste product before to buy them on internet?

It is anyway worth visiting his website : http://www.nimesha.info/
